FAQ

What is a domain name?

A domain name is a string of letters or numbers used to identify a website. Usually, a domain name is comprised of a word or phrase. (Example: Amazon.com)

What is HTML?

”HTML” stands for Hyper Text Markup Language. It is a computer programming language used for the Internet and helps to format content so it renders correctly online.

Although there are HTML editing programs that can help novices with the code, it is a fairly simple form of programming to learn. Many people use some HTML every day on wiki and social networking sites.

What is web hosting?

In order to publish a website, you must rent space and bandwidth on the World Wide Web. There are many companies that offer to host your site for you, some of which are very inexpensive or even free. There are many different web hosting packages, offering various features for both small and large sites.

What is a website builder?

A website builder is a user-friendly program that allows people to quickly create and publish a website. Website builders were designed so that anyone could design a site, even if they have no computer programming skills. There are many different types of website builders available, some offering more complex features than others.

How do I register a domain name?

Registering a domain name is now a very simple process that takes only a few minutes. First, you should choose a domain name that has not been taken by another website. Check Register.com or Whois Source to see if that domain name is available. Then visit a registration site like DirectNIC or Register.com to purchase the name.

What are subdomains?

Subdomains are like satellite sites that branch off from your main site, or domain. For example, a subdomain of www.yoursite.com might be webhosting.yoursite.com. Although subdomains are often treated as separate sites by visitors, they are related to your main domain.

What is Domain Parking?

If you would like to purchase a domain name, but are not ready to publish a site at that address, you can simply buy the name and “park” a simple page on it. Sometimes, this page will have a “coming soon” message on it or even advertising.

How do I upload my site?

Uploading a site to the Internet is simple by using File Transfer Protocol (FTP). Once you sign up with a hosting company, you will probably get an FTP account that allows you to upload files manually. Usually, your files can be accessed at ftp.yoursitename.com with your account name and password.

There are also external programs that you can keep on your desktop, such CuteFTP, that allows you to publish a site manually. However, it might be easiest to use a “point and click” website builder that is provided by your web hosting company. Using that method, publishing a site can be as easy as pressing a button.
