All webmasters want to increase search engine traffic, after all, what's the point of building a website if no one sees it? In
particular Internet Marketers are constantly seeking to increase their on line traffic, put simply, more traffic equals more sales.
There are over 100 search engines, but for all practical purposes, marketers concentrate on the big three, in order of
importance Google, Yahoo, and MSN. The job of the search engines is to deliver quality, highly relevant content to their users. To the extent
that they do that, they are successful, and can sell advertising. If they fail to deliver good content, their users will quickly migrate to a
different search engine.
According to Hitwise, the leading online competitive intelligence service, Google accounted for almost 64% of online searches
in August 2007, with Yahoo a distant second at 23%, MSN trailing with 8%, and finally ASK bringing up the rear with 3%.
All search engines have different algorthims to determine the results that they show for any particular keyword of keyphrase
search. An algorithm is a set of complex conditions for ranking a website, set into a formula that automatically delivers relevant and varied
content. To the extent that it is possible to guess at the algorithm, most marketers attempt to optimise their websites for Google, after all,
that's where the traffic is. The idea is to give search engines exactly what they are looking for, in order to rank highly. This aim, or process
is called Search Engine Optimisation, or SEO for short.
There are three key compontents to increasing search engine traffic:
1) Choosing the right keywords
2) On Page Optimisation
3) Off page Optimisation
