The term weblog was born in 1997, coined by Jorn Barger. Essentially, they were diaries, or logs which were hosted on the web - hence weblog. By early 1999 only 23 of these types of website were known to exist. They were not the user friendly content management systems that are widely used today, and the early bloggers, as they were to become known, had to know how to design a website and code html. Later that year, a company called Pyra released Blogger, inevitably weblog got shortened to blog, and new blogs began to spring up with a diverse range of content.  

The growth in blogging became a phenomena, and as I write this in November 2007, the blog search engine Technorati reports that it is tracking 0ver a hundred million blogs. Google bought blogger in February 2003, recognising that this was a slice of the net that it had to control a piece of.
